Eduard Tubin is the premier Estonian composer of the modern era and in this CD, part of a cycle of the complete symphonies, Tubin receives from the Estonian National Symphony highly charged and exciting performances that will undoubtedly be regarded as a landmark cycle. Tubin was a master of shimmering orchestral textures that bring Sibelius to mind while his propulsive rhythms suffused with a stark sensibility take on a Shostakovich-like aspect. Despite these allusions, Tubin was an original and the Second Symphony is a symphonic classic, most notably for its wrenching and moving funeral march. The Fifth Symphony is another intoxicating brew of exuberant melodies, intensely driven rhythms, and glistening string writing that once again highlight the technical mastery of these performances conducted by Arvo Volmer. This time Tubin was concerned with underscoring, as it were, the tragic circumstances of Estonia in the mid-1940s that began with the Soviet occupation. Regarded as a national anthem of sorts because of its utilization of two Estonian traditional tunes, this Symphony is no less exciting than the Second. Yet this time the music is heightened by Tubin’s use of explosive brass and pounding timpani, a reflection of the psychological drama that infuses this work.
