This CD pairs together works by two overlooked American composers who specialized in what may fairly be called the lost school of American romanticism from the middle of the 20th century. Norman Dello Joio’s ‘Air Power’ is a symphonic suite adapted from 22 scores that the composer wrote for a CBS television show in the late 1950s. Exuberantly melodious and utterly accessible, the standout section is surely the exciting “War Scenes” which reflect a wide variety of World War II moods from the perspective of the Americans, Germans, and Japanese. John Vincent’s ‘Symphonic Poem after Descartes’ has the honor of being the only work of orchestral music inspired by the French philosopher. This is a colorful and boisterous work whose material is rooted in the timpani that raps out the rhythm of “Cogito ergo sum” (“I think, therefore I am”). Vincent’s Symphony in D was a favorite of Eugene Ormandy, an assertion that is verified by this recording. This is a work deeply rooted in the tradition of romantic composition, most particularly the lush string writing which recalls the work of Respighi and Sibelius.
