Knowing that she finds him a total square, he seeks the advice of a swinging young mail boy. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi A Thin Line Between Love and Hate Writer-director Martin Lawrence billed this comic drama as his own version of the film Fatal Attraction (1987). Lawrence stars as Darnell, a hopeless male chauvinist. Darnell is a crude-but-smooth talker and lady’s man who doesn’t take no for an answer. He works for a nightclub called Chocolate City and aspires to be its owner. He trades VIP privileges at the club for favors from women. Though he is an expert at conning women, he sometimes worries about what his childhood sweetheart Mia (Regina King), who is engaged to marry him, thinks of his adventures. When the classy, elegant Brandi (Lynn Whitfield) steps out of a limousine to enter the club, Darnell feels that he’s met his ultimate prize. She rejects his come-ons, which only fuels his appetite. He pursues her, showing up with flowers at her real estate office. He finally wins over Brandi, but she becomes obsessed with him, even taking all four wheels off his sports car to ground him from his rounds. Cutting off his engagement to Mia is not enough to satisfy Brandi, who finally administers Darnell’s punishment for his misogyny. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi Love Don’t Cost a Thing The sophomore outing for writer/director/actress Troy Beyer, Love Don’t Cost a Thing is a romantic teen comedy based on the screenplay for the 1987 Partick Dempsey film Can’t Buy Me Love. Nick Cannon stars as Alvin, a brilliant but awkward teenager — and budding engineer — who seizes a golden opportunity when popular cheerleader Paris (Christina Milian) wrecks her parents’ SUV and is strapped for cash. They strike an agreement: Alvin will do the repairs for free if Paris pretend to be his girlfriend for two weeks, all in the hopes of elevating his social standing. Little does he know, being popular isn’t all its cracked up to be. Kal Penn and Steve Harvey co-star. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi King’s Ransom A multi-millionaire plans a scam that goes wrong in a great many ways in this comedy. Malcolm King (Anthony Anderson) is a wildly successful businessman who has gotten used to having things his own way. When King decides to divorce his wife, she’s none too thrilled at the prospect and makes it clear she will make him pay a huge settlement in exchange for his freedom. King isn’t keen on this idea, so he and his mistress hatch a scheme by which one of her friends (Jay Mohr) will “kidnap” King and demand a large portion of his fortune for his return, which will be kicked back to the businessman later. But King seriousl
