Composer Tobias Picker has undertaken a difficult task in creating his opera ‘Emmeline.’ The utterly tragic story, loosely based on historical events, is as depressing as they come. Set in Maine in the mid 1800’s ‘Emmeline’ opens with a pervasive sadness which prevails throughout. The heroine, Emmeline Mosher, is fourteen and about to be sent off to work in a mill to support her wretched family. At the mill she has an affair with a married man, gets pregnant and is shunned (for the first of many times). She is forced to give up her child. Twenty years later, still dreaming of her lost child who she has named “Maryanne,” Emmeline attains happiness when she falls madly in love and marries a young man. Just when it appears that all is well, another bomb is dropped. Poor Emmeline. This is the sentiment that Picker focuses on most of the time, and rightfully so. Tragic characters in opera are a dime a dozen, but Picker has found the real thing, and he takes full advantage of the rich source material. Patricia Racette gives a standout performance as the lead, and Curt Peterson as Matthew, her husband is equally engaging.
